Island Shipping began providing shipping services to Norfolk Island in June 1996. The first ship used for this service was the MV Sitka.
The M.V. Sitka, owned by Roslyndale Shipping Pty Ltd, had previously serviced Lord Howe Island & was relocated to Norfolk Island. The M.V. Sitka was originally built in Marstal, Denmark, in 1963 deadweight tonnage 400t with Bureau Veritas class notations 1 3/3 E Cargo Ship/Deep Sea/Ice. This vessel was purchased in 1986 and sailed from Denmark to Australia. It still owned and retained by the company.

It was classed with Bureau Veritas with the Notations 1 3/3 Cargo/Deep Sea/Ice and had a Deadweight Tonnage of 1080 tonnes. This vessel reached its capacity for the trade by 2000 and was replaced in July 2000 by the MV Norfolk Guardian .The Maasmond has since been renamed and is trading in the Mid Pacific.
M.V. Norfolk Guardian was specifically purchased to service Norfolk Island. Previously named the "M.V.Artkis Ocean," this vessel has to date completed many successful voyages. She is in Lloyds Survey and is 2,500 deadweight tonnes. The Lloyds Class Notations are +100A1, + LMC, UMS, Ice Strengthened Unrestricted Navigation.
